Mt. Zion Baptist Church was founded and organized in 1869 by 36 African Americans from nearby Black Creek Baptist Church. Those members received permission to form their own congregation. Reverend William Hart was the first minister and served until his death in 1872. He was later succeeded by his son, Reverend Alfred Hart from 1872-1879.
